That I May Know Him
By Joshua Goodling
I live alone and therefore spend most of my evenings by myself at my condo. And generally when I am eating supper, I'll sit in front of my computer and browse around the web while I'm eating - just to read different news articles, find interesting sites, etc. Well, last night as I was browsing, I found a news item about a guy who, since he was about 8 years old, had been a HUGE fan of Drew Barrymore. And in 2005, he was on some game show at a local television station and he won. He didn't win a large amount of money, only about $1100. But the winning answer (I didn't catch what the question was) was "Drew Barrymore". And so, he decided to finally live out his "dream" and try to get a date with her, and he produced a documentary that he and his friends shot on a cheap hand-held video camera they picked up at Circuit City.
There was a link in this article I read to the video documentary – so I clicked on it just out of curiosity.
During the video, he spent 30 days and all of his money he had won trying to get in touch with Drew and see if she would just have dinner with him. He and his friends tracked down anyone who might know someone who knew someone who might have had contact with someone who might possibly have had a chance to talk to Drew. They called people, visited people, wrote emails, sent letters, and did everything they could to try to get to Drew.
And as one would expect, they ran into one dead end after another, and finally pretty much gave up hope. Then they launched a web site that showed the short documentary of this guy's efforts to get a date with Drew and it got picked up by some talk shows and radio shows.
Finally after like 3 months or something, he actually did get to sit down for a few minutes with Drew Barrymore and have dinner. But, as one would expect - Drew wasn't really interested in having a "date" with him, it was more of a curiosity of who this guy was who would spend all this money and effort just to get to meet her. So, they met at a cafe in New York, exchanged a gift, talked for a little while and then that was it...it was over.
After I watched this (well, I skipped most of it but watched the beginning and end), I stopped and thought for a moment. Here was this guy who spent a lot of money, a lot of time and effort, and a lot of his friend's time and efforts just to get a chance to meet someone who didn't even know he existed, and certainly wasn't interested in meeting him.
And while this was just one documented case, people all over the world spend time, money, and efforts to try and get a glimpse of some of the "celebrity" figures in our world today. And we even spend a lot of time and effort trying to impress people around us who may not necessarily be of the celebrity status - but they are just people we think are important to us. However, while many of these people may be important in the world's eyes, and even in our own eyes from time to time, they are just like us - they are human beings. They are simply people like us.
We spend and spend and spend trying to gain the approval, attention, and possible affection of people, but how much time and effort do we spend trying to please Almighty God? How much effort do we put to truly knowing Him? Jeremiah 29:13 tells us, "And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart."
That's what this guy was doing - he was putting his entire heart into simply having a date with Drew Barrymore. And you should have seen him when he got the phone call that she would actually agree to meet with him. He was jumping up and down. He was so excited he stopped a passing car and told this stranger, "I got a date with Drew Barrymore!!!".
How many times have we gotten that excited about an opportunity to spend time with God?
Romans 11:33-36 read, "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen."
Here is God - the King of Heaven. He is Holy Holy Holy, Almighty God - the Creator. And He WANTS to spend time with us. He WANTS us to KNOW Him. And He is eagerly waiting for us to seek after Him with all of our hearts.
When this guy started on his quest to find Drew Barrymore, he had no idea whether he would ever reach her, or if she would ever even give him the time of day. Yet, he poured himself into this quest and gave everything he had to just TRY to get her attention for even a moment.
Just think of how AWESOME our lives would be if we poured such time and effort into seeking God and KNOWING Him!
Philippians 3:7-15 "But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do , forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you."
How well do you know Him? He's the BEST friend and companion we could EVER EVER have. And He bids us; "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28).
He has FAR more to offer us than the attention or affection ANYONE in this world can give us.
