I recently watched a video online about some of the old palaces and large estate houses in England. As the narrator was telling about the lavish lifestyle of the barons, lords, dukes, and others who have lived in those huge homes over the years, she was telling about some of the extravagant events, parties, and other things that went on in those places. She even told a few stories from years gone by about how many affairs and inappropriate activities happened amongst the upper society people who frequented those events, and she added, “aristocratic affairs, as long as they were discreet enough, were completely acceptable during those times.” It was as if, people thought, “as long as I don’t get caught, there is nothing wrong with my sinful activities!”
That seems to be the way many people even in today’s world live. They seem to think that as long as they don’t get caught in their sins, or don’t do them too often, there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. However, God doesn’t look so lightly upon sin. 1 John 1:5 reminds us, “…God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” God hates sin, and even the slightest disobedience or disregard for His commandments is wrong, no matter how “discreet” we think it is.
God didn’t think it was okay when David had an affair. God didn’t think it was okay when King Saul disobeyed Him because he got tired of waiting for Samuel to arrive. God didn’t think it was okay when Aquila, and his wife Priscilla, lied about how much money they were giving to the church. And God doesn’t think it is okay today when we do what He has told us NOT to do, or when we DON’T do what He has commanded us to do!
Sin is NEVER completely acceptable. It doesn’t matter if everyone else around us is doing it!
Paul wrote, “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” (Colossians 3:5) Sin is rebellion against God. It is saying we know better than Him, and we don’t have to obey Him. And sin destroys many a life because too often we think nothing about it. We might think that way, but God certainly doesn’t, and it’s NOT completely acceptable in His eyes!
