One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Joshua 1:8, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” Too often, the Bible becomes just a passing interest to people. Oh, they may read it often enough, but they just read it and then walk away – completely or mostly forgetting what they read. However, it should be constantly on our minds – it is the Word of Almighty God!
Psalm 1:1-2 instruct us, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Again, here are the words, “meditate day and night”. David wrote, “O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.” (Psalm 119:97)
How often do we meditate on God’s Word?
Arthur Pink wrote, “The more I am regulated by the Divine Rule–the more I shall be preserved from the mistakes and follies which characterize those who follow a course of self-pleasing. But in order to do God’s commandments, I must be conversant with them; and in order to perceive their breadth and specific application unto any problem or decision confronting me, I must “meditate on it day and night.”
It is HIGHLY important that we constantly allow our lives to be governed by the Word of God and His commandments. The ONLY way for that to happen is when we constantly keep them in our hearts and in our minds! Notice the further words in Joshua 1:8, “…so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.” We can’t obey His law if we don’t know it!
