All too often, we seem to treat God like He needs us and is dependent upon our help. God is Almighty and absolutely dependent upon no one or nothing! He chooses to allow us to be of service to Him in His great plans and purposes, and we should be so greatful and thankful to Him for even choosing to use us. And we must never forget that God is not dependent upon us in any way – He can do anything He wants, whenever He wants, and however He wishes.
Someone once asked Francis of Assisi how he was able to accomplish so much. He replied, “This may be why: The Lord looked down from heaven and said, ‘Where can I find the weakest, littlest man on earth?’ Then He saw me and said, ‘I’ve found him. I will work through him, and he won’t be proud of it. He’ll see that I am only using him because of his insignificance.’ ”
Colossians 1:16-17 reminds us, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
We do God no favors by pleasing Him or choosing to follow Him. Rather, we show to Him our great love and thanks to Him for all He has done for us. God needs nothing from us, yet He chooses to use those who will die completely to self and give Him all the honor and glory in their hearts and lives.
Paul Washer wrote, “To teach or even suggest that God made man because He was lonely or incomplete is a gross contradiction of the Scriptures. God did not create the universe because He had a need, but because He desired to make known the superabundance of His perfections, glory, and goodness.”
We owe Him everything, He owes us nothing! It is our greatest joy and priviledge to love and serve Him who has given so much to us!
