The mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds, only about .079 inches in diameter, yet it produces a tree that is about 25 feet tall on average. It is amazing how one little seed can produce such a large tree! Yet the same is true with sin in our lives.
James tells us in James 1:14-15, “…each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”
We don’t usually just jump right into sins. They begin in our lives by us planting them there. We watch something we shouldn’t watch. We read something we shouldn’t read. We go somewhere we shouldn’t go. And, when we do these things, they plant in our hearts a seed. It may be a week, a month, or even years before those thoughts and ideas we have planted in our hearts blossom. Most of the time they blossom and before we even know it, we have done something we never thought we’d do. It all starts when we allow little things into our lives that we shouldn’t have allowed in the first place.
We may think these little insignificant things don’t matter. But remember what the Bible teaches. “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7)
Job talked about this – “As I have observed, those who plow iniquity, and those who sow trouble, reap the same.” (Job 4:8)
The problem is, we plant these seed, and they become forgotten…until it’s too late – we’ve done something we wish we had never done! Remember, every choice we make in life has a reaction in our lives.
Ezekiel wrote, “The soul who sins shall die…” (Ezekiel 18:20) And when we plant seeds of sin they kill us spiritually. Be VERY careful what you allow yourself to do. You may think it doesn’t matter, but it will plant a seed that one day when you least expect it could blossom and destroy your life!
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17)
