I’ve been watching online some of the videos of the destruction that Hurricane Harvey has been causing in Texas. One video showed a business that was completely destroyed, and the owner was saying “My whole life was wrapped up in that business, now it’s all gone!” That’s the reality of this world. Nothing in this world has any lasting value, and we could lose everything we have in just a few moments, yet we spend so much time and effort focused on this life, just as everyone who doesn’t know Jesus Christ.
You see, for people who have no future or hope for eternity, this life IS everything to them, and they focus all of their attention on it. And that philosophy has overrun the Christian world as well, so that we too focus so much effort and work on making everything good, comfortable, luxurious, etc., in this world, when in reality our focus should be on eternity and what matters!
Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
If God, in His wisdom, chooses to bless us with prosperity in this life – we should even use that to further His cause, reach others with the Gospel, and lay up treasure in Heaven. And we should place little value on the things of this life – for they may be gone tomorrow!
