The Gospel of John was written as an evangelistic book, through the leading of the Holy Spirit. You’ll not find the story of Jesus’ birth nor information about His early life as you find in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. John 20:30-31 tells us why John was written, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
John starts out the book with this very important truth which we must believe in order to fully have faith in Jesus Christ, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1-3) He writes these words to make certain that his readers all clearly understood exactly who Jesus was.
Notice he said “In the beginning was the Word…” Meaning that when the world and all things around it were created – Jesus already existed. He was here before creation, because He was and is just as much God as the Father. John uses the title “the Word” to describe Jesus, because when this book was written, the Greek people believed that there had to be a divine creator who created everything, but they thought whoever that diety was, their ‘god’ wasn’t at all interested in the lives of man, he was just a ‘god’ who had created everything, and they used the Greek word “Logos” to describe who they thought was the creative source of the universe. Logos is the Greek word for “Word”. So in essense, John was saying, “Yes, you are correct, there was a devine creator of the universe, but it wasn’t just a god who created everything and then left – it was Almighty God and Jesus Christ His Son who created everything.
See how John adds, “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” He starts his Gospel affirming and declaring just who Jesus was – Almighty God, come to earth in human flesh, but still 100% God. When the world, the universe, and man came into existence – Jesus Christ (the Word) already was. He was not a created being, like men and angels, He was the creator!
