I was walking up the steps to my condo the other day and noticed something move quickly across one of the steps and then stop up against one of the railings. As I looked closer it was a frog, one of those ones that can turn different colors to hide itself, like camouflage. The frog had positioned itself tight up against the wood railing where it connected to the step and had turned a light grey color. I suppose the frog thought I wouldn’t be able to see it, as it had “hidden” itself, but the grey color of it’s skin didn’t match the natural wood color of cut lumber, and so it was quite obvious there was a frog there. I’m sure if the frog could have talked and someone asked it, it would have sworn it was camouflaged and practically invisible to anyone walking past – but the opposite was true, it was quite visible!
That’s often the way people act toward God. They think they can hide their sins and fleshly actions from the Almighty. They seem to think they can just act one way at church or when they are reading God’s Word, and then act a completely different way most of the time – and no one will notice, not even God! However, just like that frog who thought it had hidden itself pretty good, hadn’t hidden itself at all – so we can’t hide ourselves or our actions from God. We can’t even hide our thoughts and desires of the heart from God, so what makes us think we can hide anything else? God sees and knows everything about us, and everything we do! And one day, we will have to answer to Him for all that we have done that wasn’t pleasing to Him or part of His plan for our lives!
“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.” (Psalm 139:7-12)
“Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 23:24)
“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:13)
It’s a LOT easier to do the right thing, no matter how difficult, than to face the consequences of displeasing and disobeying Almighty God!
