One of the problems I see among Christians is we too often follow the advice, plans, and strategies of the world around us without seeking God first. We go to people for help with our anxieties and worries. We seek financial and business advice from today’s leading professionals. And we seek help and advice from our friends, co-workers, and family. And, I know what you’re probably thinking, “So, what’s wrong with that?” Well, the problem is – some of these people don’t have a true life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ, and so they can’t give us the right advice or direction. When we seek help from others, we must always be sure they are guiding us according to God’s Word and not worldly wisdom! The Bible clearly tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and it tells us “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked…” (Psalm 1:1) And let me remind you that the word “wicked” simply means those who do not completely follow God, the ungodly.
I remember several years ago, I got an offer to talk to a financial advisor for free, so I went. The lady was very nice and even mentioned she attended some church when I told her about my story and stuff. So, then – when she asked me what my plans were for my future and I told her “I completely trust God, it’s all up to Him!”, she looked at me like I was an idiot! We have only one source for advice and direction in this life, and that is God’s Word. If we are getting our direction and making our plans from anything else, without seeking God, we are going to be headed the wrong way! John wrote in John 1:3, “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” Since all things were made through Him, speaking of Jesus Christ, He alone is the source and wisdom on how to follow through with His plan for our lives. Remember Paul’s advice in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” “Through” HIM!
Recall Proverbs 3:6, “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Put Him first, seek Him, obey Him, glorify Him, and do what He commands – then He will guide us in the right direction for our lives. And many times, that direction is not even close to the direction other people would advise us to go, because His ways are beyond our understanding, and His plans are directed and made by His almighty wisdom and power! Always be sure to check any advice you get with what God has pointed out in the Bible!
