Proverbs 23:26 instructs, “My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.”
I like what the Bible commentator Adam Clarke (1762–1832) writes about this verse: “This is the speech of God to every human soul; give thy affections to God, so as to love him with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength. Be obedient to me in all things. My son, thou believest that I AM, and that I AM the Fountain of all good. Give me thy heart; it is I alone who can make thee happy. Observe my ways-follow me; do what is right in my sight. This exhortation contains three words: BELIEVE, LOVE, OBEY! This is the sum of God’s counsels to every child of man.
John Wesley once said, “Give me a hundred men who fear nothing but God, hate nothing but sin, and know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified, and I will shake the world!”
It seems many people who claim to be Christians in today’s world think that the God of the Bible is not the same today, He can’t possibly be worthy of ALL of our affections, and He can’t possibly do the same thing in our lives that He did hundreds of years ago. However, the Bible reminds us in Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
God CAN and WILL do amazing things in our lives, but we MUST give Him ALL of our heart!! We CANNOT go on loving this world, and it’s entertainments, dreams, and pleasures and still expect God to work mightily in us. And we HAVE to learn to be patient and wait for GOD to work. Too often we get inpatient with God and give up, going back to our former ways and life.
If you want to see God do the impossible in your life – Give Him your heart (ALL OF IT!)
