As Christians in this world today, we WAY too often “follow the crowd” in what we place importance on and are interested in knowing about.
The news and media of our day tell us the latest happenings and actions of the people they think are important such as movie stars, sports heroes, and musicians. And we follow right along and want to know the latest gossip and information about their lives, and we are often envious of them and the life they lead.
I often read in the Atlanta Journal an announcement like “Brad Pitt was spotted in downtown Atlanta!” or “Katy Perry was seen eating at such and such restaurant in Atlanta.” And if one of these “important” people is going to be somewhere that the public have access to them, such as a book signing or something – the crowd will line up for miles just for the chance to say two words to them or perhaps have their photo taken with them.
Think of how highly we value items that may have a certain signature on them or perhaps once belonged to a “famous” person. I saw one time where several thousand dollars were paid for a lock of hair that was reported to have been from Elvis Presley. And people pay thousands and thousands of dollars for items that may have belonged to other people. They are just basic everyday items that would be worthless were it not for the fact that a certain person has owned them in the past.
It’s really quite sad when you stop and think about it, how obsessed this world is with fame and fortune, and yet they ignore or could care less about Almighty God.
We walk down a street and see a highly valued sculpture or an amazing piece of architecture and we turn to our friends and say, “I know the person who designed that or built that.”, and they are amazed or highly impressed that we know this person. Yet, as a Christian, we can point to Mount Everest, the Grand Canyon, the great oceans, the apple tree, the rose bush, and say “I know the one who created THAT!”, and people are like, “Yeah, so what?” or even “What are you talking about?”.
If we personally know Almighty God, the Creator, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, HE is WAY more important than ALL of the movie stars, sports stars, and musicians combined!!! Look at ALL that HE has touched! Look at all that HE has created! He is AWESOME beyond what we could EVER imagine!
AND….We don’t have to wait in line for hours to talk to Him! He is with us ALL DAY – EVERY DAY! Think of how AWESOME God is, and what a privilege and pleasure we have in KNOWING HIM! When we put that in perspective and realize the PRICELESS VALUE in our relationship with Jesus Christ – everything else in this world PALES in comparison. Why would we even value anything else?
O LORD my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hand hath made;
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze:
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die – I scarce can take it in:
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home – what joy shall fill my heart!
Then shall I bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
