More than 3000 people die each year in accidents caused by Texting and Driving, yet thousands of people do it every day. We all think, “Ah, it will never happen to me!” One girl texted “It’s not safe to be texting and driving, HaHa!” as she plowed into the back-end of a semi killing herself instantly. We just seem to ignore the laws and act like we’re completely immune to anything bad happening to us. Why do we think a simple text message is more important than our lives or the life of someone else?
You know, the same is true with disobeying God’s Word. People all over the country have heard over and over again that they MUST obey God and those who don’t will be held accountable. Yet, they seem to think “Yeah, whatever – nothing bad will happen!” And often, like the girl who ran into the back of a semi, when something does happen, it’s too late. Isn’t it MUCH better to simply obey God? Why do we think our selfish desire and ambitions are better than God’s plans for us?
Jeremiah preached to the nation of Israel about the importance of obeying God and worshipping Him for almost 40 years, and the people just ignored him. They too thought, “Why? Nothing bad will happen to us!” And then it happened, thousands of them were killed and thousands taken into slavery because of their selfish and stupid decision to please themselves rather than God.
I wonder many times about people today who seem to have the same attitude about obeying God. And I shudder to think what might happen to them if they keep refusing to do what is right.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 sums up everything “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”
