One of the most difficult things for us to learn as Christians, is – once we give our lives to Jesus Christ, it’s no longer about us! Everything is about Him and His will.
In 2 Samuel 10, we read about King David and his army commander, Joab, and how Israel was caught up in a battle with the Syrians on one side and the Ammonites on the other – they were boxed in. We read in verses 9-14 “When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Syrians. The rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them against the Ammonites. And he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him.” So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.”
They were surrounded! And the human thing would be to pray – “God help us to win this!” But, look at what Joab prayed, “may the Lord do what seems good to him”. That’s the kind of attitude we should have in our relationship with God. Sure, we can still have desires and wishes, but it all should come down to – Let God do WHATEVER HE wants! Now, God helped them, and they won the battle – but God could have chosen for it to go another way. He’s God – He can do as HE pleases!
Remember Jesus in the garden before He was crucified? He prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42) That’s how we find the greatest life possible. NOT MY WILL – YOURS BE DONE! In EVERYTHING!!
