“When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, ‘Truly this was the Son of God!’ ” (Matthew 27:54)
When Jesus Christ died on the cross, the earth quaked, the sky turned dark, and the Bible tells us that the Centurion (a high ranking officer in the Roman army) said, “Truly this was the Son of God.”
The Bible doesn’t tell us if he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior after that – but only that he recognized with all the stuff happening that indeed Jesus Christ was who He claimed to be.
But you know what is astounding about the love of Jesus? If indeed this centurion and/or any of the other Roman soldiers and people who crucified Jesus did finally believe in Him – they too would be forgiven of their sins and become fellow believers in Jesus Christ. YES – even those who KILLED Him. The Bible says “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that WHOEVER believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
NEVER in ALL of History has there or will there be another story of such AWESOME and AMAZING love! Remember the TRUE and REAL meaning of Christmas this Holiday Season:
Dearest Lord, evermore
May Thy cross I adore
As I follow the path to Calvary;
Of Thy death I partake,
My ambition I forsake –
All my will I surrender to Thee.
Born to die upon Calvary,
Jesus suffered my sin to forgive;
Born to die upon Calvary,
He was wounded that I might live.
