Jesus taught in Matthew 5:5, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” As I was thinking over this recently, I wanted to more fully understand exactly what Jesus was talking about here, so I began to look deeper into the Greek text and the rest of God’s Word. The word “meek” here doesn’t refer to being helpless or weak like we think of in today’s English. Rather it means to exercise God’s strength under His control. In other words, blessed or happy and content are those who simply allow God to do with their lives WHATEVER His plan is, and let HIM be our strength and power to accomplish His purpose. Rather than trying to force our own will and desires, we calmly step aside and allow God to take control. Those who truly submit to His authority and complete control will one day reign with Him in the NEW heaven and NEW earth. The earth in it’s current state is under the control of Satan, but will one day be destroyed. The NEW heaven and earth will be under God’s control, and those who are faithful to Him will reign with Him.
Read these verses from Psalm 37:1-11, “Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land. In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there. But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.”
All too often it is easy for us to be envious of those who don’t follow Christ, and yet seem to have everything. I know I often have looked at those who have plenty of money and thought “Just think what I could do for God if I had that kind of money!” And it is easy to feel that way. However, when we become meek, we realize that God has a perfect plan for our lives and we commit our lives to Him and His control. We realize this world is not our home, and we have no right to feel at home in it! One day, there will be a NEW heaven and NEW earth, which will FAR out shine this current sin cursed one, and those who are meek and allow God to rule their lives will rule with Him in the NEW earth! Those who are wicked and forsake God, will have no part in that NEW earth, so if they seem to have everything NOW, why should we be envious of them?
