Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
Most people in life are not looking for a road that is hard or difficult. In fact, they want a road that is easy. And so, when they hear that you have to give up everything to truly follow Jesus Christ, they argue “No! That’s not the right road! There has to be an easier one!” And, they blindly go following the crowd who are all trudging down the easy road looking for the entrance to eternal life that doesn’t cost them anything.
Like the rich man who came to Jesus and asked “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17). The man was basically asking how to get on the right road – the road to eternal life! And when Jesus finally told him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” (Mark 10:21). He went away sorrowful. He looked at the hard, narrow way and said, “Nope…there has to be an easier way!”
Thousands of people who claim to be Christians have tried to enter through the EASY way, and there are many churches in the world today that preach and teach the “easy” way, but that way leads to destruction! Just because there are THOUSANDS who are following a road, doesn’t mean it’s the right road. In fact, it’s the WRONG ROAD!
That’s why Jesus taught, the gate is NARROW and the road is HARD, and FEW there be who find it. Because few and far between are those who will gladly give up EVERYTHING to TRULY follow Jesus….yet, that’s EXACTLY what it takes!
There will be many who stand before God one day who tried to get there by the EASY road, and will be thinking “I’ve made it!”, only to hear “And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’” (Matthew 7:23).
What road are you on?
