Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees in Matthew 12, when He said, “You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.” Whatever we value and think important in our lives is what we are going to talk about most often. That statement right there ought to make most Christians STOP and THINK.
If we visit a popular hang out, what do you think most of the people there are going to be talking about? Movies, television shows, music, entertainment, sports, and the latest gossip. Those are probably what most if not all of the conversations at that event are going to be about. Now, suppose we visit a popular “Christian” party or hang out. What do you think most of the people there will be talking about? Movies, television shows, music, entertainment, sports, and the latest gossip. Yes….probably the same exact topics.
Why? Because we spend most of our time involving ourselves in and chasing after the same exact things the world does. Is there anything wrong with talking about some of that stuff? Not necessarily some of it, but my point is – that’s ALL a lot of people who claim to be Christians seem to talk about. If you even try to have a long conversation about God and His work, they don’t know what to say. If God is so awesome (and HE IS!!), then certainly we should talk A LOT more about Him in our daily conversations. How many times have you gone to a place where people are just standing around having general conversations, and someone comes up to you and says, “Hey! Let me tell you about what God is doing in my life!” Well, unfortunately God doesn’t do a lot of stuff in most people’s lives, because they refuse to give up control and allow Him to work. I still have a long way to go but I want God to be doing such amazing things in my life that He becomes the number one topic of my conversation!!
Look at these two verses from the Psalms:
“Oh give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples. Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; Speak of all His wonders.” (Psalm 105:1-2)
Notice especially these phrases: “Make known HIS DEEDS…Speak of all HIS WONDERS.” God can do some INCREDIBLE AMAZING things in our lives, but not when we’re so wrapped up in this world.
The closer I try to get to God, the more I realize how VASTLY IMPORTANT it is to forget about this world and it’s pleasures. I don’t find a lot of people who are willing to do that, but then I also don’t find a lot of people today in who’s lives God is working GREATLY either.
James 4:8 – “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” The closer we draw to Him, the closer He will draw to us! That is why Paul wrote, “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.” (Philippians 3:8)
Paul knew the AWESOME VALUE in KNOWING CHRIST JESUS. And he said, EVERYTHING ELSE is RUBBISH.
In reality God should be doing such amazing things in our lives that He’s ALL we want to talk about!! And He will if and when we seek Him with ALL of our heart!
Sometimes it may be hard for us to find someone else who is that excited about God and His Work….but the more we talk about Him, the more we grow in our relationship with Him, the more our life will show forth His GLORY, and we will see God work in ways we NEVER dreamed possible!
“Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification *according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29)
May we TRUTHFULLY sing with the hymn writer:
Who can cheer the heart like Jesus
By His presence all divine
True and tender, pure and precious
O, how blest to call Him mine
All that thrills my soul is Jesus
He is more than life to me
And the fairest of ten thousand
In my blessed Lord I see
Is knowing God such an amazing part of your life that He is the topic of even half of your conversations? Or do the things of this world mean more to you?
“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
(Luke 6:45)
