In Luke 4:23-30, we read about a conversation between Jesus and some of the Jewish leaders in Nazareth. “And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.” And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. But passing through their midst, he went away.”
They were demanding that He do the same miracles and healing in their midst as He had done elsewhere, but Jesus knowing they would still not truly believe in Him, chose not to do them. And He even used as examples, the widow in Sidon, who had given Elijah her last bit of food, and found God’s great blessing given her in a supply of food that would never dry up. He used the example of Naaman, who was healed of his leperosy, when there were many other lepers who were not healed. Jesus showed by these examples that as the Son of God, He could and still can, do whatever He chooses, and to whomever He chooses.
Too often, we argue, “Well, God did this for him or her, so He HAS to do the same for me!” When the answer is Psalm 115:3, “But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.” We HAVE to realize that God is HOLY God, and ABSOLUTELY PERFECT in ALL that He does – even when what He does can’t make sense to us. Rather than trying to force God to fit into our human minds and understanding, we HAVE to learn to TRUST HIM and leave EVERYTHING to HIS PERFECT WILL. HE IS GOD!!
