Side Effects of Kindness

Colossians 3:12 tells us, “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness…” Jesus said in John 15:12, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

One of the ways we should shine as lights in this world of darkness is through our love, our compassion, and our kindness toward others. We are commanded in the Bible to be kind, but it is not just because God doesn’t have anything else for us to do. God tells us to be kind toward others because He knows it will be good for us.

There are many things that are good about kindness, and some of the “side effects” are:

1. Kindness makes us happier
Many people seem to think that if they get what they want, no matter what it costs, they will be happier. However, the truth is – we are happier when we seek to make others happy!

2. Kindness is good for the heart
Proverbs 17:22 tells us, “A joyful heart is good medicine…” When we do good toward others, it does good to us!

3. Kindness improves relationships
A relationship where those involved are more concerned about the others in a relationship makes for a MUCH better relationship!

4. Kindness is contagious
When we are kind to others, it spreads!

Being kind and compassionate isn’t just a commandment, it helps make our lives better and improves the lives of those around us!
