When a newborn baby comes into a house, the babies parents spend money decorating the nursery a certain way, buying the baby clothes they want for their baby, and doing all kinds of things like that. However, if we could actually communicate with a newborn baby, the baby would tell you they don’t care a bit about what color their nursery walls are painted, about whether their clothes have stripes or circles on them, or anything like that – all they wants is milk! Almost every waking moment, the baby just wants more and more milk, because it is growing.
That’s the way Peter says we are to live in the Christian life. Look at 1 Peter 2:1-3 “Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.”
Peter says, “Stop wasting your time and energy on the things everyone else in the world is focused on, and put that energy and desire toward knowing and reading God’s Word and then applying that to your life!” Once we become a Christian, that’s not all their is to salvation. We are to GROW and become more and more like our Saviour!
In 2 Peter 3:18, Peter again reminds us, “…grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” That’s ALL that is important in this life as a Christian. NOTHING else matters! We spend WAY too much time and energy on things that have no lasting value. Rather, we should “like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow”.
