The dictionary describes the word passion as “an intense desire or enthusiasm for something”. What we are passionate about in our lives is what controls us. Some people are passionate about the entertainment, they have to see the latest movies and television shows. Others are passionate about sports, they can’t miss a single game of their favorite team. And some are passionate about their careers and they work 24/7 just to get ahead and become more successful.
As a Christian, having passions such as I’ve mentioned can derail us and destroy us spiritually. When we would rather watch a movie, enjoy a game, or spend time focusing on our job than we would read God’s Word and spend time with Him in prayer – our passions are wrong and will drive us away from where we should be.
Jesus warned us in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” We cannot have earthly passions that overpower us, if we truly want to follow Him. I know many times we hear people say, “Oh, there’s nothing wrong with this or that…” But, if it becomes a passion to us – it IS wrong!
Paul wrote in Galations 5:7, “And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” And again in Colossians 3:5, “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”
Our one true passion should be to know Jesus Christ more and to point others to Him!
