One could literally spend hours talking about Psalm 119, and all of the truths that are found there. Truths that many people seem to ignore.
Look at verses 33-37; “Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.”
Notice the Psalmist expresses his interest in knowing more and more about God’s Word and His commandments. He asks God to teach him, to lead him, to incline his heart, and to turn away his eyes from anything else. I know many people seem to think “Rules are made to be broken”, especially in today’s world. However, God’s rules and commandments are NOT made to be broken. When we break and disregard His rules, we bring damage to our own hearts and lives.
Remember, God is the source of life – TRUE life that is. Note in verse 37, how the writer says “Turn my eyes from looking at WORTHLESS things; and give me LIFE in YOUR ways!” That is TRUE life. That is the life of peace and joy that one can ONLY know when we FOCUS on God and HIS WAY.
When we become a Christian, we give our lives to God. It’s NOT our life anymore. If we would only focus more on Him, we would know more and more what HE wants to do in and through His life. Like Paul wrote in Galations 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” And the ONLY way we can truly know that is when with ALL of our heart, we like the Psalmist pray “Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart.”
