Every year in Monterey, California, the Concours d’Elegance is held at the Pebble Beach Golf Course. The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the most prestigious collector car event in the world. Collectors from all over the world ship they cars to this event to be judged, in hope that they will receive on the coveted awards. Most of the cars entered in this event are valued in the millions of dollars each. And, when the owners are preparing them for the event, they will have detail teams spend hundreds of hours on each car, going over every single wire, bolt, and nut to make sure their cars are SPOTLESS! Just having a scratch in the paint or a non-functioning light bulb in a car will elminate it from the competition.
It is amazing to me how people spend so much time and effort to prepare for events like this. They begin getting their cars ready months in advance, and they spare no expense in doing so. And yet, all of these cars are simply pieces of metal and glass and leather. In the eyes of God, they are worth nothing. And one day, they will all be gone. The countless hours and millions of dollars spent on events like this are wasted in the reality of eternity. You can have a car that is worth $100,000,000, but it won’t matter a hill of beans when you get to heaven.
My point is that people spend so much time and effort preparing things in this life, going over them with a fine tooth comb, etc., and yet they give hardly a second thought to their relationship with God and their life for all of eternity.
David cried out to God in Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” It was as if he cried out to God saying “Look over my life, and if there is even one small thing out of place – let me know, so I can get it right with you!” He wanted his life SPOTLESS before God. And, I know we can never fully reach that point, but that should be our aim in life – having our life SPOTLESS before God our King and Lord!
Just as the judges in the Concours d’Elegance go over every car with a VERY close examination, our hearts and lives are examined by God, and one day we will give an account to Him of EVERYTHING that is wrong! Psalm 119:1 reminds us, “Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD!” Make that your aim in life – a life that is SPOTLESS before God!
